Vigil set Tuesday night for Mulvane teen who died of ... - Cancer Kick

A candlelight vigil will be held Tuesday night in honor of Mulvane teen Taylor Heersche, who died of leukemia hours before she was to return to home after months in the hospital.

The vigil is set for 10:30 p.m. at Mulvane?s Main Street Park, at Fourth Avenue and Main Street, following the Mulvane-Rose Hill football game. Taylor, 15, was set to return to her Mulvane home Tuesday after doctors at Kansas City?s Children?s Mercy Hospital told her family she had only a few days to live.

The town, which rallied around Taylor at Thursday?s football matchup with Clearwater, decorated Main Street with ribbons and signs in orange ? the color of leukemia awareness ? to welcome her around 5 p.m.

But Taylor died shortly before 8 a.m., following her second battle with leukemia.

DeAnne Heersche said Tuesday her daughter ? a bubbly, funny, outgoing teen who loved music, theater and her dog, Kaiser ? had a knack for uniting a community.

?I?ll bet every parent says that their kid was special. But she was a real people person. There were no strangers,? she said of her daughter.

?That kind of kid leaves a huge whole not only in our family, but in the community. We?re all going to miss her horribly.?

Crisis counselors will be available to talk to students, faculty and staff throughout the week at Mulvane High School, district spokesman Tom Keil said.

Taylor, a sophomore at Mulvane High School, was diagnosed with the leukemia in May 2008. She was 10.DeAnne Heersche said Taylor told her, ?I can live with leukemia.?

?And I said, ?Well, you can live with leukemia, so can we,? DeAnne Heersche said. ?And she lived with leukemia. She was a fireball.?

On Dec. 29, 2011 ? after treatment, chemotherapy and eight cancer-free months ? doctors announced the disease was back. This time, DeAnne Heersche said, ?it was a genetic mutation that could not be cured by chemo.?

?This last three months at Children?s Mercy was one setback after another,? she said. Taylor got shingles. A fungus grew in her lungs. A virus attacked her bladder.

?She was fighting too many things. We just couldn?t get her healthy.?

At 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Taylor?s body started shutting down. By 8, ?she was in heaven,? DeAnne Heersche said.

Taylor is survived by her parents Dan and DeAnne Heersche; 13-year-old sister, Connor; grandmother Millie Hastings; grandfather George Heersche; and several members of her extended family.

Services are at 4 p.m. Sunday at Central Community Church, 6100 W. Maple in Wichita. Those attending are asked to wear a Taylor?s Gang T-shirt or another orange top with jeans.

She will be buried Monday in Mulvane?s Littleton Cemetery during a private ceremony.

Smith Mortuaries in Derby and Mulvane are handling arrangements.

The family is asking contributions be made to several funds in lieu of sending flowers: the Taylor Heersche Cancer Fund at Carson Bank locations in Mulvane, Derby and Wichita; the Mulvane High School Thespians Club, the Mulvane Lyons/Leo?s Club, the Mulvane United Methodist Church, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Wichita.

CSN: Giants follow big win with small win

October 25, 2012, 9:24 pm

SAN FRANCISCO -- Game One of the 2012 World Series was played big, almost comedically so. Three homers from Pablo Sandoval on pitches most players would disdain as being beneath their scientific approach screams bigger than bigger than life.

So of course Game Two was very very small, almost to the point of being subatomic. Yes, the result was the same ? Giants win, 2-0, this time to take a lead of two-games-to-just-watching for the Detroit Tigers ? but the details that separated victory from defeat were subtle to the point of undetectable.

[INSTANT REPLAY: Giants ride Bumgarner to 2-0 series lead]

Madison Bumgarner, the starting pitcher who gave Giant fans the yips, stifled the Tigers on two hits over seven innings. The only threat the Tigers did mount ended because the Tigers, already sensing that scoring would be difficult, tried to get Prince Fielder to score from first on Delmon Young?s second-inning double. He didn?t, because Gregor Blanco, Marco Scutaro and Buster Posey made two throws faster than Fielder could cover the last 90 feet.

But the Giants, who nearly formed a Baseball Bugs conga line Wednesday night, had to get their runs in the tiniest way possible -- with a single, walk, line-hugging bunt and a double play grounder in the seventh, and then three walks and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

[RELATED: San Francisco Giants 2012 World Series page]

And both wins still look the same if you squint your eyes hard enough. At least that would be Brandon Crawford?s position.

The Giants shortstop handled more questions about his role in the Blanco/Scutaro/Posey relay (Blanco threw the ball over Crawford?s head to Scutaro, essentially) then about his double play grounder that scored Hunter Pence with the winning run. But since it was his best double play grounder ever, he talked happily about it, from the Blanco bunt that rolled just inside the third base line (?Oh, I thought it was a great bunt,? he laughed) to his own work.

?Frankly, I didn?t really know what to expect,? he said. ?I mean, I think I?d seen him (Tiger pitcher Doug Fister) a couple of times in Double-A, but that was it. I wasn?t trying to let a lot of things go through my head. I just tried to approach it as a two-strike at-bat.?

In other words, he walked to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out in the second game of the World Series with the score 0-0 and thought of . . . well, nothing.

Okay, next to nothing.

?I sort of thought if I put the ball in play on the ground, they?d probably go for two rather than come home,? he said. ?I mean, I looked up, and they were playing back, so I sort of knew what they wanted to do.?

And to the Tigers? delight AND despair, he delivered that.

?We played double play depth because we felt that we couldn?t give them two runs,? Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. ?To be honest with you, we were absolutely thrilled to come out of that inning with just the one run, absolutely thrilled. I mean, we had to score anyway. You give them two, it makes it tougher, obviously, but we felt like we didn?t want them to open it up. We got the double play ball and we got out of it, and it actually worked really good for us.?

Well, except for the double play producing the only run the Giants would actually need. San Francisco scored again in the eighth, denying the locals the satisfaction of knowing that the last double play that produced the only run of a World Series Game was Game 7 in 1962.

Yes. The Bobby Richardson game. The one where the Yankees beat the Giants when Willie McCovey?s two-out line drive with Matty Alou at third and Willie Mays at second went right at Richardson, killing San Francisco?s chances of winning their first Series 48 years before they actually did.

So Brandon Crawford was denied a chance to bookend San Francisco baseball history because of Pence?s bases-loaded sacrifice fly off Phil Coke in the eighth. He was also denied a chance to be in on the relay that may have crushed Detroit?s spirits.

But he delivered the tiny little run that created the tiny little win that will disappear next to the comic-book win the night before. The win that counts just the same as the one before it. The one that sends the Giants to Detroit with a choke hold on a series that skewed heavily Tiger before it began.

And yes, in the World Series, wins come in one size. The one that fits all.

Egypt activists try to stop holiday sex harassment

(AP) ? A group of Egyptian men had a mission for this year's Eid al-Adha, Islam's biggest holiday, which began Friday. They wanted to make some effort to stop sexual harassment of women, which in past years has spiked in Cairo during the holiday celebrations with the crowds of rowdy men in the streets.

Their idea was simple: to patrol downtown Cairo and shame men who harass women by cornering them and spray-painting "I'm a harasser" on their backs.

That proved pretty much impossible, however. The small group was outnumbered by boys and men who mocked them, some of them blaming women for bringing harassment by the way they dress.

Gathering on Friday afternoon on Tahrir Square, the epicenter of Egypt's 2011 revolution, about 20 men ? mostly university students ? donned neon yellow vests marked "Anti-Harassment."

They steeled themselves for confrontation with the throngs of young men and boys who had taken to the streets with spending money they received as holiday gifts on the first day of the four-day Eid, or Festival of Sacrifice, celebrated by Muslims worldwide. Many in the crowds were blaring air horns and other holiday noisemakers.

"There's no solution but grabbing them and trying to stop them," said organizer Shadi Hussien, 19. "If there were (anti-harassment) laws, we could discuss those. And if the police did their jobs, then we wouldn't be here."

Hussien and the group of mostly strangers who he organized through Facebook and Twitter say their effort is a last-ditch attempt at forcing the new Egyptian government to respond to sexual harassment, a reality of daily life for Egyptian women.

Notably, no women showed up to join their group. "No women are coming today, it's too dangerous," Hussien said. "They might be attacked."

The only two women that showed up were Egyptian journalists covering it. "I expect there will be problems today because of this event," said Aya Dabis of the Egyptian paper The Seventh Day.

In past years, the Eid has seen major instances of harassment, with crowds of young men groping passing women ? so heavily that women had to flee into shops, and for days afterward newspapers decried the mob attacks.

Harassment is a constant problem, and has only become more prominent amid Egypt's revolution, with several instances of crowds attacking women in Tahrir. In June, as women marched through Tahrir Square demanding an end to harassment, a crowd assaulted them, overwhelming their male guardians and molesting several of the female marchers.

On Friday, the anti-harassment campaigners set out, walking toward a bridge normally dotted with young couples enjoying the Nile breeze. On Friday, there were a few families but almost no women walking alone among the crowds.

But the activists became victims of harassment themselves. Hordes of all male onlookers shouted taunts and blew air horns at them. Some of the yellow vest wearers responded, slapping them away and throwing water.

"Harassment happens, why?" said Ahmed Sobhi, 17, standing nearby as the yellow vests and angry onlookers shouted at each other. "There are girls that do this to themselves, they wear jewelry and makeup. What are we supposed to do?"

Ahmed Ashraf, 20, one of the yellow vest wearers, stood on the Qasr el-Nil bridge and grimaced as some of his fellow anti-harassment campaigners ran to chase down someone they suspected of harassment while a cluster of police officers sipped tea and gazed disinterestedly at the scene.

"I see this issue of harassment every day, I finally had to do something" said Ashraf, a mild-mannered engineering student at Cairo University. "I'm just hoping that our idea will inspire some more people to take action." He politely but repeatedly asked a group of teenagers to move away from The Associated Press reporter interviewing him.

Fellow vest-wearer Ahmed Nassar, 20, said harassment was a cultural problem worsened by the government's failure to take responsibility for securing the streets so that women can walk safely.

"We try to stop the problem peacefully but the harassers respond with violence, so then we do too," he said.

Rare ladybug in Montana behaves like a turtle

Rare ladybug: The 'headless' ladybug is a new genus that can tuck its head in its throat. How rare is it? Only two of the bizarre-looking ladybird beetles have ever been collected, a male in Montana and a female in Idaho.

The newly discovered insect tucks its head into its throat - making it not only a new species but an entirely new genus, or larger classification of plants and animals.

Ross Winton captured the insect in 2009 in traps he set in a sand dune while an entomology graduate student at Montana State University. Winton, now a wildlife technician in Idaho, at first thought he had parts of an ant but then discovered the bug can hide its head, much like a turtle ducking into its shell.

Winton sent his discovery to scientists in Australia working on this group of insects and the headless ladybug was formally described in a recent issue of the peer-reviewed journal Systematic Entomology, a publication of the Royal Entomological Society.

Just two specimens of the tan, pinhead-sized ladybugs, also known as ladybird beetles, have ever been collected, a male in Montana and a female in Idaho, scientists said, making it the rarest species in the United States.

Entomologists historically used males to describe beetle species so the credit for the new discovery went to Winton.

However, the new species - Allenius iviei - was named after his former professor and Montana State University entomologist Michael Ivie.

The insect, with the proposed common name "Winton's Ladybird Beetle," may prey on aphids and other plant pests.

"The species is very unusual not only because of its small size, unique habitat and rarity, but the fact that its head is pulled back into a tube in its thorax makes its biology quite a mystery," Ivie told Montana State University News Service.. "It was so unique that it was placed, along with another new species known from Baja California, in a new genus. While discovery of a new species of beetle in the USA is not an everyday event, a completely new genus is quite rare."

He said it was unclear why the beetle slips its head into a tube in its midsection.
"It's a whole new kind of ladybug. Whatever this does, it is very specialized. It's quite the exciting little beast," Ivie said.

Brain waves reveal video game aptitude

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Scientists report that they can predict who will improve most on an unfamiliar video game by looking at their brain waves.

They describe their findings in a paper in the journal Psychophysiology.

The researchers used electroencephalography (EEG) to peek at electrical activity in the brains of 39 study subjects before they trained on Space Fortress, a video game developed for cognitive research. The subjects whose brain waves oscillated most powerfully in the alpha spectrum (about 10 times per second, or 10 hertz) when measured at the front of the head tended to learn at a faster rate than those whose brain waves oscillated with less power, the researchers found. None of the subjects were daily video game players.

The EEG signal was a robust predictor of improvement on the game, said University of Illinois postdoctoral researcher and Beckman Fellow Kyle Mathewson, who led the research with psychology professors and Beckman Institute faculty members Monica Fabiani and Gabriele Gratton.

"By measuring your brain waves the very first time you play the game, we can predict how fast you'll learn over the next month," Mathewson said. The EEG results predicted about half of the difference in learning speeds between study subjects, he said.

The waves of electrical activity across the brain reflect the communication status of millions or billions neurons, Mathewson said.

"These oscillations are the language of the brain, and different oscillations represent different brain functions," he said.

The researchers also found that learning to play the game improved subjects' reaction time and working memory (the ability to hold a piece of information in mind just until it is needed), skills that are important in everyday life.

"We found that the people who had more alpha waves in response to certain aspects of the game ended up having the best improvement in reaction time and the best improvement in working memory," Mathewson said.

This project is a part of a larger collaborative effort to determine whether measures of brain activity or brain structure can predict one's ability to learn a new video game. One analysis, led by Beckman Institute director Art Kramer (an author on this study as well), found that the volume of specific structures in the brain could predict how well people would perform on Space Fortress. That study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the relative sizes of different brain structures.

But MRI is expensive and requires that subjects lie immobile inside a giant magnet, Mathewson said. With EEG, researchers can track brain activity fairly inexpensively while subjects are engaged in a task in a less constricted, less artificial environment, he said.

The new findings offer tantalizing new clues to the mental states that appear to enhance one's ability to perform complex tasks, Mathewson said. Alpha waves are associated with relaxation, but they also are believed to arise when one is actively inhibiting certain cognitive functions in favor of others, he said. It is possible that everyone could benefit from interventions to increase the strength of their alpha waves in the front of the brain, a region associated with decision-making, attention and self-control.

"You can get people to increase their alpha brain waves by giving them some positive feedback," Mathewson said. "And so you could possibly boost this kind of activity before putting them in the game."

The study team also included researchers now at the University of Texas at Dallas and Florida State University.

The U.S. Office of Naval Research, the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Beckman Institute supported this research.

Common Traps in Small Business Risk Management | Alvarez ...

IT Project ManagementRisk management and security have been major concerns for all companies.? Business leaders heavily invest in security risk management, which aims to remove guesswork and ensure that operations run smoothly and efficiently. On average, companies spend millions on security experts and solutions. However, in the process, they also make a number of mistakes. In this article, we will be telling you about some of those common traps in risk management that make organizations vulnerable to threats.

The first mistake that organizations make in risk management is to change their entire systems instead of targeting the shortfalls. Whenever there is a problem, the officials would simply switch to a new risk management system or drastically change the current one. This is more costly and time consuming than troubleshooting problems. The second mistake that organizations make in their risk management is to replicate the audit department. An efficient risk management system should focus on potential frequency and the impact of risks, not the possible breakdowns only.

Another common mistake in risk management is overemphasizing the risk register. A risk register, which is actually a list of all possible risks, might not be much help. Most of the time people get bogged down with threats that are obsolete and a complete waste of time and resources. Business leaders are always advised to create a risk register that reflects only the probable real-world risks.

A similar problem that organizations face with risk management is using undefined risk concepts. As experts rely on an undefined scale to evaluate risks, it becomes difficult for them to identify the biggest risk and prepare for it.

Not using a risk intelligence program is also a big mistake. Without a risk intelligence program, it becomes quite difficult to identify and prevent risks. In addition, multiplying ordinals in assessing risks is a big mistake in risk management. When people multiply ordinals, they only focus on the ranking of a threat but not the probability of attacks.

These are some of common mistakes in risk management that you should try to avoid if you want your business to succeed.

Bobby Brown arrested for DUI

Bobby Brown is facing another DUI charge after being arrested in Los Angeles early today.

The 43-year-old R & B singer was booked at Van Nuys Jail after being arrested when he refused a field sobriety test at Ventura Boulevard and Corbin Avenue, ABC station KABC reported.

Brown's arrest in Tarzana, Calif., overnight marks his second in the San Fernando Valley district this year. In March, a judge sentenced him to an alcohol treatment program, probation and a fine after he pleaded no contest to a DUI charge one month after his ex Whitney Houston died.

Calls placed by ABC News to representatives for Brown were not returned.

The New Edition singer admitted himself into a rehab facility in August, less than eight weeks after he wed his second wife, Alicia Etheredge-Brown, in Hawaii.

Brown has long struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. He also faced a DUI charge in Florida back in 1996.

In a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Houston detailed the cocaine and marijuana she and Brown did together. Cocaine was also linked to Houston's sudden death in February.

Japan minister quits after mob ties scandal

Kim Kyung-Hoon / Reuters, file

Japan's Justice Minister Keishu Tanaka arrives at the Prime Minister's official residence in Tokyo in this October 1, 2012 file photograph.

By Reuters

TOKYO - Japan's justice minister quit on Tuesday because of ill health, a cabinet official said, after calls for his resignation over past ties to an organized crime syndicate. The announcement dealt another blow to unpopular Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

Keishu Tanaka, 74, only became justice minister in a cabinet reshuffle on Oct. 1, and his resignation is the second by a minister since Noda took office in September 2011.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told a news conference that Tanaka stepped down for health reasons. The resignation came a day after Tanaka left a Tokyo hospital where he had checked in on Friday with chest pains, irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure.

The health problems followed days of calls for his resignation after a magazine report linked him to the Yakuza organised crime syndicate.

Tanaka said he acted as a matchmaker at a mobster's wedding and attended a party thrown by the head of a crime group about 30 years ago, explaining that he was not aware of the groom's mob connections or the nature of the event at the time.

Tanaka has also admitted shortly after his appointment that his party branch accepted 420,000 yen ($5,300) in donations from a company run by a foreigner between 2006 and 2009. Accepting funds from foreign nationals is illegal if done so knowingly.

Tanaka's office said he had returned all of the money, according to media.

Early election?
"The resignation is likely to further weaken Noda's support within his party. Obviously, it will become more difficult for him to exert leadership," said Mikitaka Masuyama, professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. "But it is uncertain whether this could be a trigger for an early election. Given falling public support for the government, there is no benefit in him dissolving parliament and calling snap election at the moment."

Noda promised in August to hold an election "soon" as part of negotiations with the opposition on a plan to raise sales tax.

Support for Noda's cabinet has fallen to 18 percent, according to a survey by the Asahi Shimbun.

The Tanaka scandal is the latest in a string of setbacks for Noda, the ruling Democrats' third prime minister in as many years, who is expected to lose the next election.

In September last year, days after Noda formed his government, then Trade Minister Yoshio Hachiro quit over comments about radiation following a visit to the Fukushima region, scene of a nuclear plant accident following an earthquake and tsunami in March that year.

Government policy-making has stalled since the parliament session ended last month, with the opposition blocking legislation in a split parliament to try and force an early election.

Noda's ruling party has decided to convene an extra session of parliament from Oct. 29 to try to pass a bill needed to cover nearly half the government's budget spending, setting the stage for another showdown with the opposition.

Energy-sensing switch discovery could have broad implications for Biology & Medicine

Energy-sensing switch discovery could have broad implications for Biology & Medicine

Monday, October 22, 2012

Biochemists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered a genetic sequence that can alter its host gene's activity in response to cellular energy levels. The scientists have found this particular energy-sensing switch in bacterial genes, which could make it a target for a powerful new class of antibiotics. If similar energy-sensing switches are also identified for human genes, they may be useful for treating metabolism-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

"This discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of how cells sense and manage their energy levels, which is one of the most important processes in biology," said the study's senior author, Martha J. Fedor, a professor the departments of Chemical Physiology and Molecular Biology and a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

The findings are described online ahead of print on October 21, 2012, in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

A Fuel Sensor

This type of gene-switching sequence is known as a riboswitch because it appears on the strand of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that is first transcribed from a gene's DNA. Unlike other known riboswitches, which have relatively limited functions, this one acts as a sensor for the basic molecular fuel that powers all living cells and controls many genes.

The newly discovered riboswitch detects a small molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the standard unit of chemical energy in all known organisms on our planet. Scientists had thought that cells use only large and relatively complex proteins to sense these all-important energy molecules and adjust cell activities accordingly. No one had found ATP sensors among riboswitches, which can alter cell activity at a more fundamental level?usually by interrupting a gene's transcription from DNA.

Moreover, previously described riboswitches are relatively simple feedback sensors that affect narrow metabolic pathways. Most of them merely sense and adjust the expression rate of their own host gene. "This is the first riboswitch that is known to be involved in global metabolic regulation," said Fedor.

In recent years, the Fedor team had found hints that such a riboswitch could exist. Many RNA sequences with possible riboswitch activity had never been characterized, and several riboswitches in bacteria sense molecules that are closely related to ATP. Fedor and a graduate student in her laboratory, Peter Y. Watson, therefore set out to find bacterial riboswitches that could indeed sense ATP.

Caught in the Act

The task was more challenging than it might have seemed. Watson could not simply expose suspected riboswitches to ATP and see which ones stuck best to the energy molecules. ATP is present in high concentrations in cells, and its interactions with its known protein sensors are necessarily fleeting, low-affinity affairs. Interactions with a riboswitch would be expected to look the same. "Such interactions are really too weak to be detected using traditional methods," Watson said. But he found evidence that an RNA interaction with an ATP-like molecule would occur in a way that allows the brief coupling to be caught in the act?using a burst of ultraviolet radiation, which can create a strong chemical crosslink between two molecules.

In this way, he discovered a stretch of apparent ATP-binding RNA known as the ydaO motif. Watson performed structure-mapping analyses of ydaO to confirm that it binds to ATP and to determine precisely where it binds. Attaching ydaO to a "reporter" gene, he found that in bacterial cells, the reporter gene's expression level stayed low when ATP levels were normal and rose sharply when ATP levels dropped?as would be expected if ydaO is really an ATP-sensing riboswitch. Even in unaltered cells of a test bacterium, B. subtilis, levels of the genes that normally contain the ydaO motif rose and fell in the same way in response to changing ATP levels.

The ydaO motif occurs in the large subset of bacteria known as gram-positive bacteria. Across these bacterial species, it has been found, to date, on 580 separate genes. "These ydaO-regulated genes encode proteins that have a wide variety of functions, from cell wall metabolism to amino acid transport," Watson said. "It makes sense that a riboswitch in control of such disparate processes would be responding to a central metabolite such as ATP."

New Possibilities

The finding has basic scientific importance because it is the first known example of a riboswitch that binds ATP; it is also the first known riboswitch that has such broad regulatory functions. "It opens up the possibility that RNA switches are involved in the general regulation of metabolism," said Fedor.

The fact that ydaO motifs serve as "off-switches" for key bacterial genes also makes them a potential target for new antibiotics. "Hitting these riboswitches with a small-molecule, ATP-mimicking drug so that they can't turn on genes that promote bacterial growth and survival could be a viable approach," said Fedor.

Her laboratory will now search for other ATP-sensing riboswitches in bacteria and in higher organisms, including humans. A human ATP-sensing riboswitch, if targeted appropriately by drugs, might be able to alter cell activity in ways that help treat common metabolic disorders. Type 2 diabetes, which presently affects several hundred million people worldwide, is known to feature the improper regulation of ATP levels in cells.

Funding for the study, "The ydaO motif is an ATP-sensing riboswitch in Bacillus subtilis," was provided by the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

nbaigent: Boat or Watercraft Insurance: What does it cover ...

boat insuranceThere is no denying that owning and operating a boat is extremely fun and exhilarating, particularly here in Florida. However, things do happen ? often when least expected. Sinking, heavy storms, fire, theft, and collisions are just a few of the constant hazards you face as a boat owner.

Most states require a minimum amount of?liability insurance?on your boat, and if you have a boat loan, your lender will likely require you to carry?insurance?until the boat is paid off in full. Owners in Florida may also find that some marinas and yacht clubs will not allow uninsured boats to dock. Regardless of requirements, it is always a good idea to protect your investment.

Coverage for Your Boat or Watercraft:

Similar to?auto insurance, boat or watercraft insurance policy coverage and limits vary from company to company. However, the main types of coverage for boat insurance are liability and property damage.

Here is a rundown of what to expect out of your Florida boat insurance policy:

  • Property Damage Liability??? ?This insurance coverage?will pay costs from damage to other property from any accident deemed your fault. This can be damage to another boat, dock, other structure or vessel.
  • Bodily Injury Liability? ? ?This coverage will pay for expenses to an injury to others from an accident in which you are found to be at fault. Medical bills, pain and suffering, defense costs and lost wages may all be covered.
  • Physical Damage? ?? This covers damage to your own boat and its trailer. If you hit a dock or other structure and your boat is damaged, the cost of repair will be covered by your insurer.

Some other optional and popular solutions for your Florida boat or watercraft include:

  • Uninsured Boaters??? Covers you in the event of an accident with an uninsured boater.
  • Medical Payments??? Medical expenses for you or your passengers will be paid up to the policy limits.
  • Personal Property??? Pays for damage to personal property on the boat or when it?s being transferred on or off the vessel.
  • Roadside Assistance??? Covers the boat during towing and most often the towing vehicle.
  • Accident Aftermath??? Covers debris removal from an accident.

There are exclusions when it comes to Florida boat or watercraft coverage and like your home or auto insurance,?it?s always important to check with your provider to determine what policy is best for you.

Quick Tips From One Handyman To Another | Marijuana for MRSA

Before removing wallpaper from a room as part of a home improvement project, be sure to determine what type of wallboard is underneath the paper. Generally, you will find either plaster or drywall. Drywall requires much more care when removing wallpaper, as it can be damaged by over-wetting or scraping.

Improving your home yourself in anyway can be a fun, rewarding experience, but this can also be a disaster. Before starting any projects, make sure you research what you?re doing first. Getting halfway through any home improvement project only to find you?re doing something wrong is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Have a clear picture in mind of the home improvements you want to accomplish. This will prevent disappointment if the project doesn?t turn out as you planned. Utilize lists, drawings and magazine articles for ideas on how to create the finished product that will be everything you want!

When you are making a home improvement that could affect the area around it, be sure to take proper care of the area. If you will be painting, it is a good idea to lay a tarp down to protect flooring and furniture from paint splatters and spills. Make sure to cover any surfaces that you do not want scratched or damaged.

Make your home feel like a home by adding a doormat. A lot of people tend to overlook the addition of a doormat in front of a door. It not only serves a purpose of making a home feel complete, but also serves to keep your floors clean. Putting out a doormat where people can wipe their feet will cut down the amount of time you spend cleaning your floors.

A basic handyman?s toolbox should contain the following things: hammer, nails, adjustable wrench, vice grips, one interchangeable head screwdriver, a set of Alan wrenches, 3 and 1/2 inch screws, a drill, glue or epoxy putty, a metal file and/or sandpaper, and a handyman belt. These essentials will get you through most basic jobs.

When doing interior painting in your home you need to get a good brand of painters tape. There are a lot of brands on the market but not all do the jobs they profess to be able to do. You need to read reviews about the tape before using it in your home because paint bleeding onto molding can be very irritating and a pain to fix.

If you want to enhance the look of the rooms in your home with decorative items, first consider adding crown molding or applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls. Crown molding can add a little something extra to the room and make it look more finished and elegant. If your ceilings are quite low, this may not be a good option however.

If you live in an older home with a wooden floor that is beyond sanding and staining, add a few coats of oil-based paint over the planks. Choose a paint that is intended for outdoor use on decks or porches; this ensures that it will be able to withstand the occasional wet spill and light traffic. It can also hold you over until you have the resources to replace the floor altogether.

An easy, quick way to update your house with some home improvements is to start with your cabinet hardware. Whether you choose to update your bathroom or kitchen, changing the cupboard knobs, drawer pulls, and hinges can instantly change the look of the whole room.

Perpetually closed doors can make a hallway or corridor appear uninviting and uncomfortably narrow. Replace your solid door with a French door, which has a series of clear glass panels framed by wood. If you are concerned with privacy, opt for translucent glass or an adhesive to give the glass a ?frosted? look. Home Depot and Lowe?s carry adhesive window films for under twenty dollars.

When you are starting a home improvement project, make sure you realize all the steps entailed. Make a step by step list of tasks you need to complete to finish the project so you understand and are ready for all the work ahead of you. Also, plan the completion date a week after you think you will be done with the project to give yourself time to correct any mistakes.

The canny homeowner pays for quality, not name recognition when buying home improvement materials. Many expensive fixtures and fittings cost so much because they have recognizable brand names and fancy styling. Other fixtures are expensive because they are exceptionally durable and well-made. Learning to spot the difference and spending money on the latter is the way to get the most out of a home improvement budget.

Another good home improvement tip to add some flavor to your home is to take that plain painted ceiling and add some popcorn paint onto it. This will make it stand out a bit more, and make it less plain. Also, doing this is also very light on the wallet, which is perfect for these times.

As stated before in the article above, home improvement is the process of making changes, such as repair and renovation, to homes. Using the tips in this article, you should be able to tackle any home improvement project no matter the size of the task.

Vegan Recipes | Baked Cinnamon Donuts ? Like A Vegan

October 20, 2012 0

Difficulty: Medium

Makes 12

Oh. My. God. Why have I not made donuts before?! To be honest, it just didn?t strike me as worth it until I started to crave them recently but I?ll be the first to admit I?m an absolute IDIOT for not trying them until now. While they do take some time to make, the results speak for themselves and you?ll have your friends and family begging you for more! Stay tuned for many more donut recipes, I?ve got a feeling I?ll be making them much more often.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 7 gram packet dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup Nuttelex, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup caster sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups plain flour
  • Spray oil
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Method

  1. Warm your milk in in the microwave for a minute before whisking through the apple cider vinegar and setting aside for a few minutes.
  2. Pop the mixture into a large bowl before adding the yeast and ?1 tablespoon of melted butter. Allow to sit for a few moments before adding the vanilla and 1/4 cup of caster sugar.
  3. Sift in the flour and combine well in the bowl before tipping out onto a lightly floured surface.
  4. Knead with your palms for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth.
  5. Spray a large bowl with spray oil and roll the dough around to coat it. Cover and allow to rise for one hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 200?C and line two baking trays with baking paper.
  7. Punch down the dough and tip out onto a lightly floured surface. Give it another light knead for a couple of minutes before rolling the dough out to be about 2cm thick.
  8. Now you need to cut out your donut shapes! If you?re going for your traditional donut shape, you can cut out using a large drinking glass and making the hole with a small lid (from an olive oil bottle for example). This will give you a regular sized donut. You may need to re-roll the dough to get the full dozen donuts but hang onto the holes and any excess dough.
  9. Space your donuts out six to a tray, you can scatter the holes on the trays too. Cover each tray with a tea towel and allow the donuts to rise for another half an hour.
  10. Pop the trays in the oven and cook for about 10-15 minutes, until they?re lightly golden.
  11. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes. In the meantime you can combine the remaining sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  12. With a pastry brush, cover each donut with melted Nuttelex before dunking in the cinnamon mixture. Make sure it?s evenly coated and gently shake of the excess.
  13. Best served warm but will keep for a couple of days.

Money Summit & Wealth Expo | Personal Finance for Gen Y |

By Kendrick Chua, CIS

One quick look at Jackie and you?d immediately recognize an accomplished young professional. She does, after all, exude a confident aura that had helped her rise above the corporate ladder. Five years after she started working, she has already garnered several company and industry accolades, and three promotions that landed her a much coveted position in the multinational company she works for. There are other offers for her but Jackie is comfortable with the environment she?s in right now.

But Jackie has one embarrassing secret she dared not let anyone know about. Despite earning an enviable salary, Jackie is deep in debt. Each time her statements arrive, Jackie, with heart pounding, expresses the same reaction when she reads them?with shock and fear.

And she does not know what to do.

A different kind of generation

The 27-year-old Jackie belongs to Generation Y or what sociologists call the Echo Boomers or Millenials. Studies are diverse but those who belong to this generation are born between 1980 and 1995, so they?re between 15 to 30 years old today, basically from mid-teens to 20-somethings. They are characterized as being independent, idealistic, and competitive. They are achievement-oriented and most of all, tech- and Internet-savvy.

Bruce Tulgan, an internationally recognized leadership and management trainer list several traits of Gen Yers:

  • High expectation of self. Gen Yers are confident. They challenge themselves to excel in their respective fields and they believe they are capable of delivering results and accomplishing the things assigned to them. They would scoff at the work if they don?t find it demanding and treat it as an insult on their abilities.
  • High expectation of others. Since they think highly of themselves, Millenials expect others to keep up with them. This causes them to be competitive. Often, they would compare themselves against others. If a friend is earning more, a Gen Yer would find ways to increase his income so he can be at par or even exceeds what his friends earns. They see it as a challenge and not a threat and they thrive in that kind of situation.
  • Ongoing learning. Those who belong to Generation Y see learning as fun and important. But they do not want to be restricted with lectures and traditional forms of education. They turn to their colleagues for professional advice. They are at ease with technology?another trait unique of them. Hence, they browse the Internet for additional resources that can enrich their lives. They also learn to shop online.
  • Goal-oriented. Gen Yers know what they want and how to get what they want. If they do not know how, they would find someone who knows. If faced with a brick wall, they?d climb over it, walk around it, or even dig their way just to get pass it. They?re determined to succeed and that?s why they have a road map and blueprint for achieving their goals.

Jackie fits the typical description of Generation Y. However, when it comes to managing her finances, she?s not as confident as she wants to be. The vibrant and dynamic girl who?s very articulate during company presentations and meetings seem to have a loss for words when the topic is brought up.

?I only learned what unit investment trust funds (UITFs) and mutual funds are a couple of months ago,? confesses Jackie. With the low minimum investment requirement, usually only P5,000, Jackie can certainly afford to invest in these?if only there is some money left. Given her salary, there should be enough savings, but Jackie sheepishly adds she does not keep track of her expenses. ?Whatever is in my wallet, I spend it.?

For her debt, she reveals, ?At first I was paying everything in full because I was told that credit card companies charge high interest rates.? She?s right. At present, these credit card companies charge an average of 3.5% monthly interest. This translates to a whopping 42% a year! This is not just on the unpaid balance as most of people thought. The interest is based on the average daily balance of the bill. That means, if you do not settle everything in full on or before the due date, interest will also be applied on your subsequent purchases.

Credit card companies and banks have actually made purchasing through credit fun and convenient. There are a lot of promotions being offered: 12-month zero percent installment, swipe now pay three months later, free movie tickets and gas discounts, just to name a few. All designed to entice the likes of Jackie to charge everything.

And Jackie agrees. ?Later on, I started charging all my purchases, including things I used to buy in cash. It didn?t bother me back then because I was earning well and I knew I can pay my balances off.? True, Jackie was earning above average compensation and thus, easily fell to the myth that having a high income is enough. Unfortunately, her housemate moved out and her household expenses immediately doubled. It also didn?t help that her shopping also got out of hand because of these promotions the companies bombard the consumers.

?Once, I bought a new pair of shoes everyday for one whole week,? Jackie confesses. Estimated cost for all those shoes: P32,000. Shopping felt so good back then, she never thought of saving a part of her income. ?I wanted to enjoy every peso of my salary. Saving and investing a part of it never crossed my mind back then,? she adds.

One purchase led to another and before she realized it, her debt was equivalent to one month of her salary. Now, it has ballooned to two months? worth. This is causing Jackie unwanted stress. Even her current salary can only allow her to pay a little more than what the minimum payment is. What?s worse is that she doesn?t know who to turn to for help, and so she keeps all the anxiety to herself.

The other side of the coin

Jackie?s story is not uncommon. Although there are no official studies on how much this generation have in savings or in debt, a quick and informal survey revealed that there?s not much on the first and a lot on the second.

Not all are like Jackie though, but they are considered the exception rather than the rule. They have risen above the stigma and pressure and went on to build a strong financial blueprint. Among them is 27-year-old Celine Salazar.

?I initially started with nothing in savings. But after I realized I needed to start planning for my future, I started diligently saving 10 percent of my salary every payday,? Celine shares. She has been doing this since 2009 and not even her second pregnancy made her stop from her commitment.

This is on top of the two variable life insurance plans she had purchased. And what made it even more impressive is that Celine is, in her own words, ?a single mother of two beautiful baby boys.? Most recently, she just bought a property in Nuvali. ?I purchased it because I saw it as a community where I can raise my children and see them enjoy their childhood.?

Alvin Taba?ag, a Registered Financial Planner and the author of the best-selling personal finance book 12 Steps to Build Wealth On Any Income, reveals that that Filipinos ?think? about retirement at early age ? in their 20s. However, he laments, ?Unfortunately, most young professionals just ?think? but don?t act. If every young adult starts to save for retirement and practices responsible money management when he lands his first job, then a majority of Filipinos would be able to retire in comfort and at a younger age.?

Celine has a strong financial blueprint and a concrete goal; and she acted on these. At the rate she?s going, it won?t be long before she can fully achieve financial prosperity.

Start young, start early

Money management cannot start too early for Chrystynn Francia-De Leon. A third year Electronics Communications Engineering (ECE) student at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), Chrystynn appreciates the Personal Financial Management course her school offers. ?I learned that I should invest my money to accumulate higher returns and to enjoy compounding interest on a long-term basis. I also became aware of different assets and liabilities, which later on I will make use of in order to increase my net worth,? says Chrystynn.

Just how many 19-year old, third year college student have the same awareness as Chrystynn does? ?To sum it up, it is very essential to have knowledge on personal finance so I can prepare myself in handling my future income to achieve my short term and long term goals,? Chrystynn quips.

But she has done more than just visioning. Chrystynn saves more than 50 percent of her allowance which sums up to P2,000 every month. She?s able to do this because she buys only the things she needs. When most people her age thinks of saving up to buy the latest gadgets, Chrystynn used that savings and invested that in a variable life insurance plan! She proudly shares, ?I already bought my own personal life insurance with investment component from my mother.?

Her mother, Sarrah Francia-de Leon has eight years of experience working as a financial advisor for one of the largest life insurance companies. And how does mom feel seeing her daughter being proactive with her finances? ?I was quite surprised when she told me that she wanted to get a plan out of her own savings coming from her monthly allowances and the scholarship fund; but I am glad that I have a daughter like her who is thrifty and gives value to her money,? Sarrah says proudly.

Chrystynn certainly displays financial maturity beyond her age; and it?s the students that Sun Life Foundation, through its It?s Time! advocacy, wishes to engage with. Product Marketing Manager Carla Gonzalez shares, ?We believe that it is best to start them young. Before these students join the workforce or become entrepreneurs, the value of money and the right attitude towards money must be taught. Because ultimately, the It?s Time! financial literacy advocacy?s aim is to inform and empower Filipinos so we can achieve financial security.?

It?s Time! is the first ever multimedia and multi-awarded financial literacy advocacy in the country. The recognition it has garnered include the Philippine Gold Quill and Anvil Awards. As part of its campaign, It?s Time! had toured several campuses already?all yielding exceptional results.

Carla proudly says, ?Students have actually expressed their interest in life insurance and mutual funds. Others even asked the financial advisors how the financial vehicles work; and in one instance, some participants opened mutual fund accounts right then and there!?

These Gen Ys have become receptive to this kind of promotion. Expose them to the right environment and they would make the right decisions.

Professional advice

Young professionals are more often than not, faced with a plethora of financial problems but these can be lumped into three categories: impulsive and/or excessive spending, piling debt and zero savings. All of which cause undue stress that can lead to less productivity.

What advice can they learn from Alvin and Registered Financial Planner J. Randell Tiongson, two of the country?s leading financial planners, then?

Impulsive and/or excessive spending

?Eliminate or reduce expenses for items that you can live without. Train yourself to buy only the things that you need and are really important.? Alvin says. The more expensive the things you want to buy, the longer the waiting period should be. He suggests an effective way of curbing unnecessary spending is to ask yourself this: ?Will this purchase bring me closer to my dream of financial prosperity or will this just make it more difficult to achieve.?

Randell even recommends allocating budgets even for gimmicks, gadgets, etc. but always ensure you spend less than what you earn. ?Kids will be kids,? he says.

Piling debt

To eliminate debt, Tiongson suggests, ?Prioritize getting out of it first. It?s the first order of the day. Bite the bullet, sell whatever you have and stick to using cash.? Alvin agrees. ?It would also help if you can find ways to earn extra income which you can use to pay off the debt faster.? Both also suggest to follow a simpler and less expensive lifestyle and not to live a life you cannot afford.

Savings and Investing

For savings and investing, Alvin suggests, ?Make it a point to save 10-20 percent of your income (or allowance) every month. If this is too big, start with a smaller amount, say five percent or even two to three percent, and then gradually increase it until you get to 10-20 percent. Saving is also like spending ? it can be addictive. Even if you started out with small amounts, you will soon be motivated to save more when you see your savings grow.?

?

Alvin concurs, ?Know what your goals are, it will motivate you to save and invest.? Financial advisors, and even motivational speakers, have time and again emphasized on creating goals. Is it buying your dream car or travelling abroad? Is it your children?s education or your retirement dreams? Whatever they are, these goals can motivate you and inspire you to take proper actions.

?Then when you already have sufficient savings, try investing your money. There are more investment vehicles available in the market with better potential returns other than the deposit products offered by banks. Taking calculated risk while still young is advisable,? adds Randell.

To learn more about proper money management, both advise to read magazines and books about the subject, and even attend seminars on entrepreneurship, financial planning, and investing. You can also organize learning events inviting experts on the subject matter.

The Internet revolution has resulted Gen Y to live in a double-edged environment. It can either work for you or against you. The same technology informs you of the next investment or business trend, and the next big sale. One can help you get closer to achieving your goal; the other might just be a stumbling block. The decision is yours to make but hopefully, it?s the one that can help you be a financial success.
