The league?s decision to allow former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to attend Sunday?s game between the Seahawks and the Rams has spawned a string of conflicts accounts and explanations.

Adam Schefter of ESPN explained earlier today that Williams is permitted to attend any game he wants.? Williams, as Schefter explained it, has been banned not suspended.? As a result, Williams currently isn?t employed by any team.? So he can go watch any team play.

The league tells PFT that Williams needs to request permission on a game-by-game basis.? The mere fact that Williams must say ?mother may I? suggests that he?s not free and clear to attend games on the basis that he has been banned.

Moreover, banned is worse than suspended.? So if the guys how have been suspended can?t attend, why can the guy who has been banned attend?

Most importantly, he hasn?t been banned.? He has been suspended.? As the Rams explained it earlier today via email to PFT:? ?He was hired by the Rams as defensive coordinator, then the NFL suspended him indefinitely.?

So he?s still employed by the Rams.? And given that he has received the worst of the various suspensions, the fact that he has been permitted to attend a game makes the league?s decision even more curious.

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma agrees:? ?What a coincidence gregg williams is all of a sudden allowed to attend rams games starting today?sidedeal???? Yessir.?

Vilma is referring to the September 14 sworn statement from Williams, which implicates Vilma as offering $10,000 to whoever knocked former Vikings quarterback Brett Favre out of the 2009 NFC title game.? And Vilma implies that the league allowed Williams to attend the game because Williams cooperated with the league.

Either way, suspended Saints coach Sean Payton should be demanding the ability to attend Sunday night?s game between the Chargers and the Saints ? and if the league says no, he should be demanding an explanation.

Afghan bomber kills 14, including 3 NATO troops

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber driving a motorcycle packed with explosives rammed his bike into a patrol of Afghan and international forces on Monday morning in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 14 people, including three NATO service members and their translator, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast.

The bomber struck a group of Afghan police and international troops shortly after they got out of their vehicles to walk through a market area in Khost city, the capital of Khost province, said provincial government spokesman Baryalai Wakman.

Six civilians and four police officers were killed in the blast, Wakman said.

Coalition spokesman Maj. Adam Wojack would only confirm that three NATO service members and their translator died in a bombing in the east on Monday, without giving an exact location or the nationalities of the dead.

The international military alliance usually waits for individual nations to announce details on deaths. Most of the troops in the east and in Khost province are American. It was not immediately clear if the translator was an Afghan citizen or a foreigner, Wojack said.

Dozens of Afghan civilians were also wounded in the bombing.

The city's hospital alone was treating about 30 people injured in the explosion, said Dr. Amir Pacha, a physician working there. He added there could be other victims being treated at nearby private clinics.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in text messages to media that the insurgent group was behind the attack.

Somali troops enter former militant port city

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? Hundreds of Somali troops on Monday entered the port city of Kismayo for the first time since Kenyan troops carried out an amphibious assault on the coastal port city last week, a military offensive that caused al-Shabab militants to flee.

Residents in Kismayo said that Somali troops drove into the port city and met little or no military resistance. Residents largely remained indoors and businesses were closed.

"They are on the streets now. They are firing gunshots now but there is no fighting," Mohamed Hashi, a resident in the town told The Associated Press by phone. "We pray their arrival will not bring chaos and robbery as happened in other towns. We have actually suffered a lot," she said.

It wasn't immediately clear if Kenyan forces working alongside the Somali troops also entered the heart of Kismayo. The Kenyan forces have been on the northern edge of town since the initial assault last Friday. More Kenyan troops are closing in on Kismayo from the west.

The Kenyan Defense Forces said on its Twitter feed Monday afternoon that African Union, Kenyan and Somali troops were "consolidating the gains in Kismayu and expanding out to the rest of the city." The Kenyan military said that civilian safety and security was a top priority.

Kismayo was the last stronghold of the al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabab, which taxed goods coming into the port to help fund their activities. Al-Shabab announced their withdrawal from Kismayo shortly after the Kenyan assault on Friday.

The Somali and allied African forces have made significant progress against al-Shabab, the top U.S. official on Africa, Johnnie Carson, an assistant secretary of state, said Monday.

The African Union force "deserves an enormous amount of credit for driving al-Shabab out of Mogadishu and its environs and also for moving against the city of Kismayo," he said.

The African Union force is made up of Ugandan and Burundian troops, who pushed al-Shabab out of Mogadishu in August 2011, and forces from Djibouti and Kenya. Carson said troops from Sierra Leone would arrive in Somalia on Monday and Tuesday to bolster the AU force, which is known as AMISOM.

The Islamist extremist rebels of al-Shabab, who once controlled nearly all of Mogadishu and all of south-central Somalia, now hold only small villages, and the capture of Kismayo serves as a huge economic blow. Al-Shabab is now likely to resort to guerrilla-style attacks like suicide and roadside bombings.

The next challenge for Kismayo is to get the different clans from the surrounding area to cooperate in order to peacefully govern the city.

Carson said the U.S. recognizes that there will be clan competition in Kismayo now. He said he hopes the government in Mogadishu alongside AMISOM and the U.N. "will go in very quickly and establish political stability and a political system that takes into account the various clan and sub-clan interests."

Al-Shabab found little popular support in Kismayo, say residents, because of the conservative brand of Islam it tried to impose on residents. Al-Shabab carried out public executions, whippings and amputations as punishment. The militants also enforced a conservative dress code and social rules.

"Somali forces are now patrolling the city streets. It's a big day and the end of the fear for us," resident Muse Ali said. "We hope the change will lead us into peace and clan agreements."
